The idea of wellness is not only based on perfect physical health that is usually associated with looking good or being able to lift certain weights but it is made up of a number of components. There are dimensions or components of health that need to be fulfilled by every person to be categorized as “well”. So what are those components of health? And how are they related to the wellness of a person? Let’s find out their relation and their importance to a person’s health.

What is Wellness?

For so long health and wellness have been considered one thing and people are still unable to find the difference between the two. But wellness is quite distinct from your health. Your overall health includes better physical and mental health. But wellness is about healthy living by continuously improving your living habits. It refers to the best physical and social health. One needs to be doing well in its society and as a person as well to be considered “Well”.

What are Health-Related Components?

Health can be associated with a number of components, but there are five major components that one needs to take care of to be called a healthy person. These components are:

1. Physical Health

The ability of your body to function properly is considered under physical health. It’s your body that needs to be fit in every situation for other components to work properly as well. That’s why when one takes care of their mental health by staying away from negative thoughts and learning new things, mental wellness boosts. This also makes a person more curious about the things in their surroundings and new questions arise which urges them to seek their answers and improve their knowledge.

3. Emotional Health

Emotional health is somewhat related to mental health as well. One needs to be strong enough mentally to endure the pressure of the situations and can think positively in every worse situation as well. A person shall be aware enough to accept the reality of the situation so he can achieve stable emotional health. To achieve emotional wellness, one needs to:

4. Spiritual Health

Some might wonder what spiritual health has to do with a person’s wellness. Well, it has quite a deep connection. One’s spiritual health refers to one’s sense of purpose in life and their connection with the forces in nature. Spiritual health has been known to have a greater impact on a human’s wellness, that’s why if you want to be labeled as “well”, you need to work on your spiritual health as well. That could be done by meditation, or spending quiet time with yourself to realize your purpose in life. It can also be achieved by studying deeper about certain religions that you follow. In short, it includes everything that makes you feel purposeful in life and makes you more connected to yourself and nature.

5. Social Health

Our interaction with other people in society in a positive manner is considered our social health. And based on our relations with others, this health could be a good or bad condition. The idea of wellness relies on social health because a person cannot be called well if they cannot survive in their surroundings, no matter how healthy he/she is physically. So, to keep your social health in check, you need to work on your social skills, including:

Wellness is a holistic concept that requires you to switch basic daily activities to healthy activities, which can ultimately result in keeping you healthy, both physically and socially. To achieve wellness in your life, and that too for the long term, you need to make sure that you eat the right food, do the right kind of exercise, keep your thoughts sane, and have a positive social life.


Physical health is the foundation that needs to be strong enough to hold a person for a long time. That’s why to achieve wellness in your life it’s necessary that you work on all five components of health. Your physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual should all be in good shape for you to do well in your life and accomplish your dreams.
